Het Alhambra bevat veel symmetrische patronen. Maar hebben de Moorse kunstenaars alle mogelijke symmetrieën gecreëerd die mogelijk zijn op deze muren? Het blijkt dat ze dat bijna deden. Dat probleem kan worden aangepakt door de wiskundige taal van Galois. Galois bewees dat er 17 mogelijke symmetrieën zijn. Het wordt goed uitgelegd in de bespreking '"Symmetry, reality's riddle" van Marcus du Sautoy.
