Willem de Veroveraar stierf op 59-jarige leeftijd nadat hij van zijn paard was gevallen. Hij overleed in het klooster van St. Gervais in Rouen en werd begraven in de Abbaye-aux-Hommes.
Het verhaal gaat dat het op de dag van zijn begrafenis zo heet was dat het lichaam in de stenen kist begon te "ontploffen", waardoor de kerk geëvacueerd moest worden.
In 1562 roofden dieven zijn lichaam en de inhoud van zijn graf. Het monument, dat 80 jaar later werd gebouwd, zou alleen nog een dijbeen van Willem bevatten.
