Van Ornans tot Parijs neemt het museum de bezoeker mee op een reis door Courbets carrière, de esthetische doorbraken die hij maakte, de artistieke kringen waarin hij verkeerde en zijn politieke betrokkenheid tot aan zijn ballingschap en dood in Zwitserland. Met een oppervlakte van meer dan 1000 m² en 21 permanente en tijdelijke tentoonstellingszalen is het Courbet museum ondergebracht in drie prachtige herenhuizen. Dankzij de nieuwe opzet kunnen tijdelijke tentoonstellingen gelijktijdig met de permanente tentoonstelling worden gehouden.
