De Galerie nationale du Jeu de Paume werd van 1940 tot 1944 gebruikt voor de opslag van Joods cultureel erfgoed dat door het naziregime in Frankrijk was geroofd.
Het museum werd bezocht door hooggeplaatste nazi-functionarissen, zoals Rijksmaarschalk Hermann Göring.
Een deel van de kunst was bestemd voor het Führermuseum in Linz, terwijl de nazi's probeerden zogenaamde 'ontaarde kunst' (moderne kunst die in de ogen van de nazi's onwaardig was) op de internationale kunstmarkt te verkopen. Onverkochte kunst (waaronder werken van Pablo Picasso en Salvador Dalí) werd in de nacht van 27 juli 1942 op een brandstapel op het terrein van het Jeu de Paume verbrand.
Er hangt nog steeds een gedenkplaat aan de muur.
