De Tempel van de Franse Natie, ontworpen door Soufflot, was gewijd aan de monarchie en aan Saint Geneviève, beschermheilige van Parijs. Het werd een tempel voor grote mannen tijdens de Revolutie en zijn roeping veranderde in de 19e eeuw. Sinds 1885, het jaar dat Victor Hugo het Panthéon betrad, is het de thuisbasis van de grote figuren van de Franse natie, van Voltaire tot Simone Veil, inclusief Rousseau, Zola en de Curies. Een eerbetoon aan de geschiedenis en de grootsheid van Frankrijk.
