Het kanton maakte deel uit van het arrondissement Loudéac tot dat op 10 september 1926 werd opgeheven en het werd ingedeeld bij het arrondissement Guingamp.
Vanaf 2015 omvat het 24 gemeenten, maar door de fusie van Mûr-de-Bretagne met Saint-Guen tot de gemeente Guerlédan is dit vanaf 2017 herleid tot 23:
