Toen het bekend stond als het Hôtel d'Alsace, bracht Oscar Wilde daar zijn laatste dagen door in kamer 16, en merkte hij beroemd op: "Ik sterf boven mijn stand". Andere voormalige bewoners zijn onder anderen Marlon Brando, actrice en zangeres Mistinguett, en schrijver Jorge Luis Borges, die zei dat het alsof het "door een meubelmaker was gebeeldhouwd". Het verblijf van Borges in dit hotel was geen toeval: toen hij negen was, vertaalde hij Wilde's "De Blije Prins" naar het Castiliaans en sindsdien was hij een grote fan van zijn werk geworden; Borges wilde sterven op dezelfde plek waar de schrijver van zijn jeugd ook stierf.
