In de Cevennen zie je nog veel moerbeibomen. De fokkerij van zijderupsen begon in de Cevennen in de 16e eeuw. De larven kregen de bladeren van de moerbeiboom. Er zijn maar liefst een ton bladeren nodig om gedurende een maand 25 g wormen te voeden. Daarom zie je in de dorpen veel moerbeibomen. De huidige productie is bijna nihil. De zijde-activiteit had een blijvend effect op de architectuur in de regio. Gebouwen werden getransformeerd en extra verdiepingen werden toegevoegd om plaats te maken voor de productie van zijderupsen.
