Rond 1220, op een terrein dat al sinds de 10e eeuw bezet is, sloot Enguerrand III de stad af met een omheining.
De fort van Coucy wordt geflankeerd door drie poorten. De bezoeker betreedt eerst de bovenstad, omgeven door 2 km van ommuringen, via een van de drie versterkte poorten. De wallen bieden je een wandeling van 3 km die je de kiosk, de middeleeuwse tuin, de kerk, het museum, opmerkelijke uitzichten en het dierenpark laat ontdekken.
