Saint-Loup-de-Varennes is beroemd omdat hier een van de eerste foto's werd vastgelegd. Dat gebeurde in 1826 door Joseph Nicéphore Niépce. Hij gebruikte daarvoor een soort lichtgevoelig asfalt op een metalen plaat gesmeerd, en dat werd in een camera obscur geplaatst. De belichtingstingstijd was 8 uur.
