Met zijn meer dan 75 meter hoge torenspitsen wordt hij vaak verward met de kathedraal. Deze in de 11e eeuw gestichte abdij was een van de rijkste in de middeleeuwen. Van het gebouw is alleen de elegante gevel overgebleven, maar de refter, kloostergang en bijgebouwen van de monniken zijn nog intact. Het Centre d'Interprétation de l'Architecture et du Patrimoine (interpretatiecentrum voor architectuur en erfgoed) is gevestigd in de voormalige abtswoning, die volledig is gerestaureerd. Een doorschijnende maquette van de abdij van Saint-Jean-des-Vignes, met een prachtig decoratief effect, wordt omringd door verklarende panelen die de sleutel vormen tot het begrijpen van de stad en haar erfgoed.
Mis de majestueuze refter niet.
Nieuw in de rondleiding is de mogelijkheid om de onlangs gerestaureerde buitentoren te betreden.
