In de middeleeuwen maakte Hardoncelle deel uit van het kasteel Watefale bij Saint-Marcel. Het kasteel werd aangevallen door de Luikenaren in 1437. De familie d'Argy bezat het kasteel vanaf 1529. Daarna, in 1612, bekende het zijn heerlijkheid aan zijn suzerein, de hertog van Guise, baron van Rumigny. De versterkte structuur ging vervolgens over in handen van de families Villelongue de Wasigny, Verrières, La Salde de Montereau, Pétré, Samboeuf, Voyart, Eslaires, Beffroy de La Grève. Aan het eind van de 19e eeuw woonde Gustave Gailly, ijzermeester en burgemeester van Charleville en voormalig parlementslid, in het kasteel. Zijn zoon, de historicus Charles Gailly de Taurines, kocht het landgoed. In 1951 kocht generaal Roger Noiret, toekomstig afgevaardigde van de Ardennen, het pand en restaureerde het.
