Deze reeds eeuwen bekende bergpas is vermoedelijk tijdens de Tweede Punische Oorlog door Hannibal en zijn olifanten gebruikt om Rome vanuit het noorden aan te vallen. Ook stierf hier in 877 de keizer van het Westelijke Frankenrijk, Karel de Kale. Napoleon heeft de pas goed begaanbaar gemaakt voor verkeer. De pas maakt in de winter deel uit van het skigebied van Val Cenis Vanoise en is ongeveer 6 maanden per jaar afgesloten voor verkeer. De pas begint aan de noordkant bij Lanslebourg, was vooral vanaf de middeleeuwen een belangrijke verbinding tussen Frankrijk en Italië.
