Archeologische vondsten bevestigen dat hier in de 9de eeuw reeds een versterkt site was. In 923 vinden we een eerste vermelding van een versterking ( donjon ) op deze plaats Het kasteel met zijn 11 torens werd gebouwd in de dertiende eeuw. In de periode 1222-1253 liet Thibault IV de versterkingen van stad en kasteel moderniseren. Zo hadden de nieuwe torens ook een woonfunctie
