Het werd uitgevochten tussen het Franse V Corps onder generaal Pierre Louis Charles de Failly, en het IV Corps onder generaal Constantin von Alvensleben, het XII Corps onder prins Georg van Saksen samen met het I Koninklijk Beierse Corps onder generaal Ludwig Freiherr von der Tann. De Fransen werden verrast in hun cantoneringen en teruggedreven naar Mouzon, met verliezen van 7.500 man en 42 kanonnen tegen de 3.400 van de Duitsers.
