De kamers werden in het midden van de 19e eeuw gecreëerd door koning Louis-Philippe voor zijn museum van de Franse geschiedenis en werden geopend in 1843, in een tijd waarin Frankrijk werd overmand door enthousiasme voor zijn historische verleden, en vooral de periode van de Kruistochten. De kamers zijn gevuld met meer dan 120 schilderijen die verband houden met de Kruistochten. Koning Louis-Philippe includeerde de namen van de duizenden families wiens voorouders naar de Kruistochten gingen, wat op dat moment veel vervalsingen aanmoedigde.
