De onderneming is in 1952 als bouwonderneming opgericht door Francis Bouygues, met het doel de wederopbouw na de Tweede Wereldoorlog te helpen vormgeven. In de jaren 70 is Bouygues door de bouw van boorplatforms betrokken bij de off-shore industrie. De diversificatie gaat verder met de overname van een waterdistributiebedrijf in 1984 en een deelneming in het televisiestation TF1. In 1996 werd Bouygues Telecom opgericht.
Sedert 1989 leidt Bouygues' zoon Martin Bouygues het bedrijf.
Daarnaast is de groep Bouygues via dochter CiBy 2000 betrokken in de filmindustrie.
Ten slotte heeft de groep Bouygues 29,3% van de aandelen Alstom in handen.
