De Vijfde Franse Republiek is de huidige staatsvorm van Frankrijk die bestaat sinds 1958. In deze republikeinse staatsvorm gaat de meeste macht naar de president. De huidige president is Emmanuel Macron.
De Vierde Franse Republiek, die toch al door grote instabiliteit gekenmerkt werd, werd ondermijnd door het traumatische verloop van de dekolonisatie van Vietnam en Algerije. Vooral het Algerijnse probleem dreigde het politieke leven van Frankrijk te vergiftigen.
