De geschiedenis van de parochie Canenx is niet gedocumenteerd, met uitzondering van de vermelding van een kasteel met uitzicht op de rivier de Douze, waarrond het dorp zou zijn gebouwd. De kerk is een romaanse fundering uit de 11e of 12e eeuw, waarvan het hoofdschip en vooral het chevet van kleine, regelmatige puinstenen bewaard zijn gebleven. De noordelijke zijbeuk en waarschijnlijk de klokkentoren werden toegevoegd in de gotische periode, misschien in de 15e eeuw. Het kleine westelijke portaal en de sacristie zijn moderne toevoegingen en de ramen werden vergroot of doorboord in de 19e eeuw, misschien in 1856, toen het gebouw werd gerestaureerd.
