Het is hier in de Rue Daubigny dat Vincent Van Gogh de laatste keer zijn ezel neerpootte om zijn schilderij "Boomwortels" te maken. Reeds is 1882 maakte van Gogh enkele tekeningen van van zwarte, knorrige wortels, waarover hij toen aan zijn broer Theo schreef dat hij er de strijd des levens in tot uitdrukking wilde brengen. Het Van Gogh Museum herkent een vergelijkbare symboliek in dit schilderij Boomwortels, dat Van Gogh acht jaar later schilderde, net voor zijn dood.
Deze plaats is wel niet publiek toegankelijk. Maar aan de hand van oude foto's kon men precies bepalen op welke boomwortels in deze straat Vincent zijn laatste kunstwerk maakte voor hij stierf op 29 juli 1890, in Auvers-Sur-Oise. Het was in Auvers-Sur-Oise, hét kunstenaarsdorp, dat Vincent zijn laatse 70 dagen van zijn leven doorbracht. Het is dan ook een pelgrimsoord voor Van Gogh-liefhebbers geworden. Met meer dan 300 000 per jaar zakken ze hier naar het dorp af.
