It is here in Rue Daubigny that Vincent Van Gogh last put his easel to create his painting "Tree Roots". As early as 1882, Van Gogh made several drawings of black, grumpy roots , about which he wrote to his brother Theo that he wanted to express the struggle of life. The Van Gogh Museum recognizes a similar symbolism in this painting Tree Roots, which Van Gogh painted eight years later, just before his death.
This place is not open to the public. But from old photographs it was possible to determine exactly on which tree roots in this street Vincent made his last work of art before he died on July 29, 1890 , in Auvers-Sur-Oise. It was in Auvers-Sur-Oise, the artists' village, that Vincent spent the last 70 days of his life. It has therefore become a place of pilgrimage for Van Gogh enthusiasts. With more than 300,000 per year they descend here to the village.
