In de 11e en 12e eeuw was Courcelles-le-Roi een koninklijk kasteel dat vaak bezocht werd door de koningen van Frankrijk. In de 14e eeuw,
Philippe VI de Valois het kasteel aan Nicolas de Braque, zijn grote geldmanager. Het feodale kasteel, verwoest tijdens de Honderdjarige Oorlog, werd in 1389 herbouwd door Jean Braque als een imposant fort. Het werd in 1424 door de Engelsen ontmanteld en Georges de Brilhac, adviseur en kamerheer van de hertog van Orléans, liet het uit de ruïnes herrijzen. Het kasteel werd geplunderd tijdens de Franse Revolutie. Daarna raakte het in verval: de westelijke toren stortte in 1880 in en het dak van de westelijke vleugel vloog in brand tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog en stortte in.
