De Barbacane, een 16e-eeuwse wachttoren, heeft muren die doorboord worden door talrijke harquebuizen.
Deze vooruitgeschoven versterking verschafte toegang tot de stad.
Tijdens de Honderdjarige Oorlog tegen de Engelsen moesten de inwoners van Cahors een nieuwe wal bouwen in het noorden (de Barbacane) om de vele huizen en kloosters te beschermen.
Het monument is van buitenaf zichtbaar, maar kan niet worden bezocht.
