Corps de garde du XVIe siècle, la Barbacane possède des murs percés de nombreuses arquebusières.
Cette fortification avancée servait d'accès à la ville.
En effet, durant la guerre de cent ans contre les Anglais, les habitants de Cahors durent construire un nouveau rempart au Nord (la Barbacane), afin de protéger les nombreuses habitations et les monastères.
Le monument est visible depuis l'extérieur, il ne se visite pas.
