De woning wordt ondersteund door een blinde schildmuur. Dit bestrijkt een breed, vlak aanvalsfront en beschermt ook de onderste binnenplaats. In het tijdperk van de vuurwapens werd de verdediging aangevuld met een vijfhoekig bastion in het oosten en een grote ronde toren in het zuiden. Dit barbican heeft zelfs horizontale kanonnen.
De geschiedenis van New en Old Windsor is niet eenvoudig te ontwarren. Newindstein werd uiteindelijk verlaten na de Dertigjarige Oorlog aan het eind van de 17e eeuw
Vandaag beleeft Newindstein een opleving. Een dynamische vereniging restaureert en promoot deze ruïne, die buitengewone architectonische kenmerken heeft en bijzonder goed bewaard en onderhouden is.
