In 1959 overhandigde André Malraux, de toenmalige minister van Cultuur, aan François Schleiter, burgemeester van Verdun, 16 monumentale standbeelden die generaals en maarschalken uit het Eerste en Tweede Rijk en de Eerste Wereldoorlog voorstellen. Ze waren oorspronkelijk bedoeld om de boulevards van Parijs te sieren. Deze historische figuren zijn onder andere Cambronne, Oudinot, Exelmans, ?

? de Porte Neuve en zijn oude wachthuisje,
? de ingang van de luisterzaal van de "Artillerie" die leidt naar de buskruitmagazijnen in de lagere citadel.
