Dolleren dankt zijn naam aan de rivier Doller, die waarschijnlijk afkomstig is van het Keltische die oller, wat stromend water betekent.
Het dorp werd voor het eerst vermeld onder de naam Tholier in 1567.
In de 18e eeuw werden er granietgroeven geëxploiteerd, evenals ijzer- en kopermijnen. In 1847 werd er een katoenweverij opgericht. Op 6 augustus 1914 viel het dorp terug onder Franse heerschappij en werd het tijdens de oorlog gebruikt als rustplaats voor het achterfront.
