Dolleren deve il suo nome al fiume Doller, che probabilmente deriva dal celtico die oller, che significa acqua che scorre.
Il villaggio viene menzionato per la prima volta con il nome di Tholier nel 1567.
Nel XVIII secolo si sfruttavano le cave di granito e le miniere di ferro e rame. Nel 1847 fu fondata una tessitura di cotone. Il 6 agosto 1914, il villaggio tornò sotto il dominio francese e fu utilizzato come area di sosta per il fronte posteriore durante la guerra.
