Houthakkers werkten van oktober tot juni in het hart van het bos en schuilden in een met schors bedekte hut die ze aan het begin van het seizoen zelf bouwden. De hut diende als werkplaats, eetkamer en slaapzaal voor de arbeiders. Er was een bank in het midden om het hout te snijden, gereedschap hing aan het frame, een stoel en een open haard in de vloer. De houthakkershut aan de vijver van Masselièvre werd twee jaar geleden gerestaureerd en is een zeer aangename plek om te picknicken, beschut door het water.
