Gebouwd in de 15e eeuw en versterkt in de 18e eeuw, ondersteunt de Grote Muur het verhoogde terrein waarop de kerk en het plein rusten. Het vervult zowel een defensieve functie (muur) als een stedenbouwkundige functie (ondersteuning). Er zijn nog enkele muursegmenten van de omheining van ongeveer 350 meter die in de 14e eeuw werd opgericht. Acht van de negen versterkte poorten die als tol dienden zijn verwoest tijdens de godsdienstoorlogen. Slechts de poort van Lyon, onder de Grote Muur, is overgebleven.
