Erasmus Darwin, grootvader van Charles, vestigde zich in 1757 in Lichfield om te proberen hier een praktijk te vestigen. Een paar weken na zijn aankomst herstelde hij met behulp van een nieuwe behandeling de gezondheid van een jonge man wiens dood onvermijdelijk leek. Dit verzekerde zijn succes in de nieuwe omgeving. Darwin was ruim vijftig jaar lang een zeer succesvolle arts in de Midlands. George III nodigde hem uit om Royal Physician te worden, maar Darwin weigerde. In Lichfield schreef Darwin ‘didactische poëzie, ontwikkelde zijn evolutiesysteem en vond onder andere een orgel uit dat het Onze Vader, het Geloofsbelijdenis en de Tien Geboden kon reciteren.
Zijn zoon, Robert Darwin en vader van Charles werd hier geboren.
