De Manx-kat werd voor het eerst beschreven op het eiland Man. Het ras Manx ontstond vóór de 18e eeuw op het eiland Man (vandaar de naam). Een opvallend kenmerk is dat ze huppelen tijdens het rennen en geen staart hebben. Recente ansichtkaarten van het eiland Man tonen een cartoon van een kat wiens staart wordt overreden en afgerukt door een motorfiets, omdat motorracen populair is op het eiland, aangezien er geen snelheidslimiet is.
