Leeds Castle, gelegen in 500 acres parkland in het midden van het platteland van Kent, dankt zijn naam niet aan de stad Leeds, maar aan zijn eerste eigenaar, een man genaamd Leed, of Ledian, die in 857 een houten kasteel voor zichzelf bouwde. Het eerste stenen kasteel werd in 1119 op een eiland in het meer gebouwd en werd later herbouwd en uitgebreid door Edward I, die een set buitenmuren, een barbican en de 'gloriette' toevoegde, een D-vormige toren gebouwd op het kleinste van de twee eilanden in het meer.
