Leeds Castle, umgeben von 200 Hektar Parkland im Herzen der Kent Landschaft, verdankt seinen Namen nicht der Stadt Leeds, sondern seinem ersten Besitzer, einem Mann namens Leed oder Ledian, der sich im Jahr 857 eine Holzburg baute. Die erste steinerne Burg wurde 1119 auf einer Insel im See erbaut und später von Edward I. umgebaut und erweitert, der einen äußeren Mauerring, ein Barbican und die 'Gloriette', einen D-förmigen Turm, der auf der kleineren der beiden Inseln im See errichtet wurde, hinzufügte.
