Strikt genomen slaat de naam "Big Ben" niet op de gehele toren aan het Britse Houses of Parliament, maar slaat alleen op de grote bel binnen de toren. Tot september 2012 was de officiële naam voor de structuur "De klokkentoren van het Paleis van Westminster" of "The Bell Tower of the Palace of Westminster". Nu is de officiële naam de "The Elizabeth Tower." Waar de naam Big Ben vandan komt is niet zo duidelijk. Het zou de bijnaam van een krachtig gebouwde man zijn in de klokkengieterij waar de klok werd gemaakt. Een andere theorie stelt dat de klok werd genoemd naar Benjamin Count, een bokskampioen.
