De Bourzi van Methoni was gedurende vele perioden een gevangenis. Charles Duval, een Franse tolk in Constantinopel, beschrijft dat in 1826 de gevangenen hier in de Bourzi zaten in de modder van het zeewater. Hier werd de bisschop van Methoni, Grigorios, op 11 mei 1825 doodgemarteld na de mislukte revolutie tegen de Turken in Methoni en Pylos.
