Als je denkt dat een dambordvormig stratenpatroon een voorbeeld is van moderne stedebouwkunde, dan moet je eens naar Pireaus gaan. Reeds in de 5de eeuw voor Christus ontwierp Hippodamus van Milete voor Pericles de indeling van de Atheense havenstad Piraeus in dambordvorm. Hij vervaardigde stadsplannen die uitblonken in orde en regelmatigheid (het zogenaamde schaakbordpatroon), in contrast met de tot dan toe gebruikelijke complexiteit en wanorde van steden als Athene, die meestal geleidelijk rondom een akropolis waren ontstaan.
