Kimolos heeft een echt interessant kenmerk. Wanneer het regent, is het eiland bedekt met zeep schuim. De bodem in Kimolos bestaat uit zeepklei, een natuurlijke zeep die de lokale bevolking gebruikt als gewone zeep. De bodem is rijk aan zilverglans bariet en bentoniet, terwijl de kalk (witte minerale klei), geschikt voor de productie van zeep of poeder en gebruikt in de geneeskunde. Het was al sinds de oudheid beroemd. Ley de Elde meldde al over dit bijzondere kenmerk van het eiland. Het bevat Kaolien. Bekend in de oudheid als "Kimolische aarde", werd het gebruikt als zeep voor het wassen van kleding. Tegenwoordig wordt het voornamelijk gebruikt in de papierindustrie, in keramiek, in rubber en de cementindustrie. Het wordt gevonden aan de zuidkust van het eiland, maar het wordt alleen gewonnen in het gebied van Kalamitsi.
