Dit is een cactussoort afkomstig uit het zuiden van Noord-Amerika, Midden-Amerika, het Caribisch gebied en het noorden van Zuid-Amerika. Dit betekent dat de oude of middeleeuwse Grieken deze plant hier in Griekenland nooit hebben gezien. Het kan een behoorlijk agressieve, invasieve soort worden.
