Description

De katholieke kerk van Naxos bevindt zich in de Kastro. Deze dateert uit de 13e eeuw, gebouwd tijdens de Venetiaanse overheersing, onder toezicht van Markos Sanoudos. De oorspronkelijke tempel is tussen 1500-1600 na Christus gerestaureerd door de prominente katholieke families van Naxos, wiens donaties tot op de dag van vandaag bewaard zijn gebleven. De tempel heeft een bijzonder historisch en cultureel belang, omdat het iconen bevat die westerse en oosterse invloeden combineren. Bekijk zeekr de 11e-eeuwse, tweezijdige icoon van de Maagd Maria en Johannes de Doper.
