De vulkaan op Nisyros is sinds 1888 niet meer uitgebarsten, maar blijft rustig actief. Het hele eiland is in feite een vulkaan, met in het midden een caldera van 4 km en vijf kleinere kraters, waarvan de 3.000 tot 4.000 jaar oude Stefanos de meest imposante is. Met een diepte van 27 meter en een diameter van 330 meter wordt het beschouwd als de grootste en best bewaarde hydrothermische krater ter wereld. Als een slapend beest blaast het nog steeds zwaveldampen uit zijn vele fumarolen, waardoor het voor sommige mensen moeilijk is om het gebied te bezoeken.
