De prachtige Pinus halepensis of Aleppoden herken je aan de mooie bolvormige kruin. Het is de meest dominante dennensoort in deze bossen. Naast de heerlijke geur ken je deze boom ook van zijn sap. De hars wordt al eeuwenlang gebruikt om aarden kruiken waterdicht te maken. De wijn in die vaten kreeg zo een zeer specifieke smaak waar men zo dol op werd dat men het nu artificieel toevoegt. We kennen die wijn als retsina.
