Op de Black Mountain vind je een typische boom of struik: Quercus cocciferea of Kermes eik. het is de dominante boom van maquis. De Kermes-eik wordt vaak geparasiteerd door een insect, genaamd Kermes vermilio. Kermes is een rode kleurstof die wordt gewonnen uit de gedroogde lichamen van de vrouwtjes van dit insect. De Kermes-insecten zijn inheems in het Middellandse Zeegebied en zijn parasieten die leven op het sap van de waardplant. Ze werden door de oude Grieken en Romeinen als rode kleurstof gebruikt. De kermeskleurstof is rijk rood, karmozijnrood. Het heeft een goede kleurechtheid in zijde en wol. Het werd in de middeleeuwen zeer gewaardeerd voor het verven van zijde en wol, met name scharlakenrode stof.
