Het was hier bij de hoofdingang van de baai van Navarino dat op 8 oktober 1827 de verenigde vloten van de grote mogendheden op het middaguur de golf van Pylos of de baai van Navarino blokkeerden. 's Middags werden 60 van de 89 Turks-Egyptische schepen en 6000 zeelieden naar de diepten van de golf gestuurd, 45 m onder zee. Deze historische slag in de geschiedenis zou bekend worden als de Slag van Navarino.
