Lake Voulkaria is een zoetwatermeer. Onderzoekers hebben bewijs gevonden van meerdere tsunami-impacten op dit meer. De oudste tsunami (generatie I) had waarschijnlijk geen invloed op het meer zelf, maar verbond het voormalige meer van Cheladivaron met de open Ionische Zee; deze gebeurtenis vond plaats in het 6e millennium voor Christus of kort daarna. De daaropvolgende tsunami-generatie II wordt gedateerd rond 1000 voor Christus; de volgende generatie III raakte het meer waarschijnlijk tijdens de klassiek-hellenistische tot maximale Romeinse tijd. Dikke afzettingen van tsunami-generatie IV uit de 4e eeuw na Christus werden overal rond het meer aangetroffen, waarschijnlijk sporen van de bekende aardbeving en tsunami-ramp in 365 na Christus die grote delen van de oostelijke kust van de Middellandse Zee verwoestte.
