Šibenik is een mooie stad aan de Adriatische kust in midden-Dalmatië. De stad ligt beschut in een baai aan de monding van de rivier Krka. De geplaveide steegjes en wirwar van straatjes verlenen het stadje een Italiaanse middeleeuwse charme. In tegenstelling tot de meeste Kroatische steden werd Šibenik niet gesticht door de Romeinen maar door de Kroaten zelf in de 9de eeuw, dwz geen evenwijdige straten, wel schuine. De kroaten maakten geen plan zoals de Romeinen, Maar aan elke kruising ligt een soort plein, waar inwoners bij elkaar komen.
Ze bouwden hun stad op een rotsachtige heuvel, in de loop der eeuwen werden verschillende forten gebouwd om de oude stad te verdedigen. In de 20 ste eeuw richtte de stad zich op de industrie, dus in de omgeving minder fraaie beelden.
