Tijdens de Anglo-Normandische vestiging van Ierland bouwde Maurice Fitzgerald van Allen daar een kasteel als onderdeel van een verdedigingslijn langs de rivier de Barrow van Carlow tot Lea Castle nabij Portarlington. In de nabijheid van het kasteel werd een kerk gebouwd die de plaats zijn naam gaf.
Het oorspronkelijke kasteel en de kerk bevonden zich binnen wat nu het terrein van Kildangan Stud is. Het kasteel werd in 1882 opgeblazen en de stenen hergebruikt om het bestaande huis in Victoriaanse Jacobijnse stijl te bouwen naar het ontwerp van William Hopkins.
