Het werd verborgen binnen de muren van een veel groter en recenter Georgisch gebouw gevonden, de Lodge van de Ondersecretaris, ook bekend als Ashtown Lodge, die tot 1978 werd gebruikt door de pauselijke nuntius. Op dat moment werd de Lodge als structureel onherstelbaar beschouwd vanwege droogrot. Echter, terwijl het gebouw werd afgebroken, werd Ashtown Castle ontdekt. Het is nu gerestaureerd en maakt deel uit van het Bezoekerscentrum van Phoenix Park.
