Nadat Filippo Brunelleschi de wedstrijd had verloren om de deuren van het Baptisterium te ontwerpen, vertrok hij op een studiereis. Overal ging hij zaken opmeten en bestuderen. Hij bezocht onder andere het Pantheon in Rome en was gefascineerd door de koepel. Dat was de grootste koepel van de antieke wereld. Daar kreeg hij de inspiratie om zo een koepel op de kerk Santa Maria del FIore te plaatsen, want die stond al eeuwen onbedekt.
