De villa dankt zijn naam aan de panoramische ligging op een heuvel naast de weg, volledig omringd door groen. Men komt er via een laan die de helling oprijst, omgeven door maar liefst 189 bomen, waaronder cipressen, cederbomen uit de Libanon en citrusbomen.
Het werd vanaf nul gebouwd in de 18e eeuw en versierd met talrijke fresco's, volgens de destijds heersende mode onder de Pisaanse aristocratie om recreatiewoningen te bouwen in het gebied rond San Giuliano, dat in die periode een bestemming werd voor het kuistoerisme van de Europese aristocratie.
